בושה – שאנד – Shame – позор
A special day starts with the fall or “liberation” of Aleppo. For the Muslims, the day after the birth of the Prophet, but it is not the point. For the Russians, the day when the Orthodox Church celebrates Saint Andrew, Apostle – the first who was called by the Lord on the Sea of Galilee. It is a major feast for the Eastern Byzantine Church that follows as we do the Julian calendar.
Still, “Andrew – Ανδρος – АндрейАндрий” mean “man”, a male, someone who is human with brain and conscience, speech and capacities to think, write, argue, discuss, show love instead of enmity. Andrew as apostle correspond to the “new man” and can be compared with Adam/אדם whose name, in Hebrew, refers to “man, manhood, male, then earth and soil (adamahאדמה), adom/אדום = red, or even dom/ד(ו)ם = silence. In other letters, m’od/מאוד = much, very, plus but also the financial power as in the Sh’ma/Hearken Israel verses.
Still, tonight we can think of Diogenes the Cynic who was looking for the courage of truth as a French philosopher lectured in our days (M. Foucault), stressing the incredible era of individualism and full hedonistic attitudes and “morals” – Diogenes was challenging the inhabitants of Athens and Corinth, walking around in daytime “looking for a honest man”… He answered to Alexander the Great that he would not recognize his father’s bones since they were similar to those of a slave. And tonight we could walk throughout the whole of the city of Aleppo, even in nightmares and repeat at the sight of all the ruins and the living fighters of whatever side : “where is there a single honest man?”
Yona walked through Niniveh and the inhabitants turned to the Lord covering themselves with ashes. We proclaim tonight that the First Called Apostle of Jesus of Nazareth is celebrated with magnificence in the Oriental Churches and traditions. But “death, where is your victory?” – the question is real and pregnant as it has been throughout the ages. One cannot sing that “Christ is risen, He is risen indeed!” and cause the death to such an extent fancying on victory, human victory that, certainly will vanish tomorrow and in the coming weeks as the specialists and observers have foretold.
Man remains raw, basic instinct and even worse. Still, there are the Hebrew blessings of the Amidah in Hebrew “Blessed is He/ Who resurrects the dead and reinvigorates with confidence those who lie in the dust of Hebron (the Patriarchs)” – this very blessing turned into the Byzantine joyful and paschal cry: “Christ is risen, he is risen indeed and he tramped death and to those who are in the tombs he gives live (revives them)”. But when we say these words, in the Hebrew tradition as in the Christian one of the East, one should not lie or fake or betray anybody or dream, or cheat anyone, especially God to begin with. We dare not test the living by killed them and then speak of their living and eternal memory. Today, some people will think that a city has been freed or has fallen.
This is the cynical aspect of our very short understanding of life and destiny. Because the Allied fail, the Russian Army will face an invisible wall that is still vivid, the wall of raw hatred that is substantial. This is not judgmental. It is just the evident experience of “parrheisia/truth” that relies upon disorders. Our generation did not reach the revolving point of new structures. Today, in 475 CE, the Talmud was “closed” as it is known for the present and offer the powerful insights of Oral Law like an ocean of the Divine Presence in open letters and words.
